If I'm no longer a client of a company, my information should be deleted.
My info was hacked from an insurance company that I was no longer a client of. I've had hacks and the info that was hacked was old, ie previous addresses, not my married name, etc. If it hadn't been saved, my info would not have been available.
IDX. Can’t help you with kreeping your information under your control. I worked as a compliance officer for a corporation that did about 95% of their work in the US. And about 5% internationally. I worked on a project for about a year as a result of a law passed in the European Union that is exactly what you are stating. Any company you do business with you have the right in the EU to request the company delete your information. Of course there are a lot of caveats. Around this as companies need to be able to protect themselves so they were allowed to keep you name, address, telephone number, email, and information about the products or services your purchased. But the company would need to detr any saved credit cards, government ID numbers, security codes, expiration dates etc. what is even more important thought isn’t these little token pieces of information but rather everything you do, look at, chats, etc. that you engage in while on a website. If this is something you want, you need to get in touch with lawmakers, to get a bill drafted. I will tell you though there is a lot of money that companies make off this data and California was close to passing a law so the tech companies said they would do it voluntarily so that a federal law could be passed. Of course they got the federal law torpedoed and now we once again having nothing. So it is an uphill battle because of the monetary value of the data.
